South Florida Medical Research is seeking participants for a study on new medications and treatments targeting advanced prostate cancer that has spread from the prostate gland to the lymph nodes, bones or other organs of the body.

January 2, 2013 – South Florida Medical Research is seeking participants for a study on new medications and treatments targeting advanced prostate cancer that has spread from the prostate gland to the lymph nodes, bones or other organs of the body.

Men who have been diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer may be experiencing symptoms that include severe back pain, bone fractures, spinal cord compression, high calcium levels and a decreasing quality of life. Symptoms vary according to the extent of bone involvement and the aggressiveness of the cancer.

Advanced prostate cancer is often difficult to cure, but with effective treatment patients improvement of symptoms or prolong survival for several years.

Most new cancer treatments are developed in clinical trials like those performed by the physicians and staff of South Florida Medical Research. These studies are designed to answer specific questions about new and developing treatments, or new ways of using known treatments. Prescription medications provided to patient volunteers have gone through the clinical trial process and are FDA approved for use. Thanks to these clinical trials and research studies, study participants receive access to expert medical treatment during the trial at no cost, and are educated about their illness – a crucial element for participants to achieve successful results.

South Florida Medical Research medical experts evaluate the effectiveness of new drugs or treatment strategies with advanced prostate cancer patients. Participation in a clinical trial may offer access to better treatments and advance the existing knowledge about treatment of this cancer.

There are various treatments in place for advanced prostate cancer, including chemotherapy, hormone therapy, radiation therapy and surgery. The investigational medication used in this program is intended to treat cancers which respond to hormones.
