A recent uptick in package theft prompted the insurance agents at D.M. Lovitt Insurance Agency to warn Arizona residents and provide tips on how not to become a victim.

Tucson, Arizona (PRWEB) December 20, 2012

The holidays are upon us, and now is the time of the year when evenings are spent with loved ones and gifts are exchanged. While some shoppers braved the crowds for Black Friday deals, other holiday shoppers have turned to the Internet for their gift giving needs. Online shopping has made buying holiday gifts easier; however, there are some serious risks that are associated with it. It is estimated by the U.S. Postal Service that 1 billion packages will be delivered this holiday season. Last year, there were 2,000 reported thefts, and this number is on the rise this year already.

While it is certainly concerning to learn that there has been an uptick in the number of packages stolen after they have already been delivered to homes, there are preventative measures that can be taken. The Arizona insurance agents at D.M. Lovitt Insurance agency want residents in Arizona to be cautious because although Arizona home insurance policies may cover stolen property, who really wants to deal with the hassle?

  •     Expecting a package but will not be at home? Reach out to a trusted neighbor or friend to pick up the parcel.
  •     Take advantage of the delivery confirmation or signature required options for delivery.
  •     Have packages delivered to the office instead of the house.
  •     Track packages to be sure of their arrival and make a point to pick up the package at that time.

Thieves are generally looking for electronics; therefore, big boxes may tip them off. Additionally, expecting a large number of packages on the same day can be very tempting to thieves who may think a resident will not notice one gone missing. Keep track of all online orders and shipment dates as well as when the package should arrive and what should be in it.

Remember, if a package has gone missing the first step is to call the delivery provider and request a shipment update. If the delivery was confirmed by the post office, UPS or FedEx and the package hasn't been received, the next step is to call the company and report the items missing. Some companies will understand and reship the contents. Others will open a claim on the package.

Residents with questions or concerns about how Arizona home insurance plays into a stolen package are encouraged to speak with one of the friendly agents at D.M. Lovitt Insurance.
