Paul recommends, “On a regular basis a homeowner should walk the property looking for dry-rot, cracks in the stucco, water penetration, rusting iron and chalking, (a fine powder residue that occurs on the surface of paint that can cause fading).” Noting potential problems can alert homeowners before a small problem becomes a dilemma.

Mold commonly grows in areas with little or no sun exposure. Airborne dirt can also turn into mold. If mildew and fungus is detected around the home, it deserves prompt attention. Paul suggests, “Washing surfaces vigorously with a solution of one tablespoon of detergent, one to two pints of liquid bleach and one gallon of water. The area should be rinsed thoroughly. Treat severely infected areas a second time after 1 to 2 weeks to further eliminate growth.” Wearing gloves and covering the immediate landscape is recommended.

In order to keep the outside of the home looking new, take a garden hose and rinse the house off once a year. “The volume of water is responsible for the cleaning. The small amount of chlorine found in tap water can help prevent mold growth as well,” said Paul. Despite the advice of many DIYers, do not pressure wash. “Pressure washing is reserved for painting preparation, 3,000 psi, (pounds per square inch) can damage the current paint job,” explains Paul.

Hard water can leave spots that are difficult to remove on the windows. Inquire of a window washer to come and spray the home clean before they get started on the windows.
