Doctors Health Press, a division of Lombardi Publishing Corporation, and a publisher of various natural health newsletters, books, and reports, including the popular online Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin, is reporting on a recent study that found that banaba leaf extract, an ancient remedy, can be beneficial in treating diabetes. The study was conducted at the Suzuka University of Medical Science in Wei, Japan, and published in Evidence-based Complementary and Alternative Medicine (2012).

As reported in Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin (http://www.doctorshealthpress.com/diabetes-articles/ancient-remedy-could-be-the-answer-for-diabetes), the banaba is a tree native to India and the Philippines, and it has been a folk remedy for hundreds of years. Now researchers have tracked down the compounds in banaba that are responsible for its glucose-lowering effects.

As noted in the article “Ancient Remedy Could Be the Answer for Diabetes,” banaba leaves contain a substance called “corosolic acid.” Corosolic acid helps the body break down sugars and carbohydrates so they can be transported throughout the body to be used as a source of energy. Apparently, corosolic acid has the ability to repair the connection between insulin and insulin receptors; this means that banaba leaf extract makes it much harder for the body to be in a state of insulin resistance.

As the Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin article outlines, because banaba leaf extract has this ability to stimulate glucose transport into cells, it can play a significant role in helping diabetics to maintain healthy blood sugar levels. Banaba leaf could also help control cravings for carbs, such as sweets or breads, evening out those ups and downs in blood sugar levels.

According to the article, the Japanese research team concluded that corosolic acid could decrease blood sugar levels within 60 minutes. Corosolic acid was also found to exhibit antihyperlipidemic (cholesterol-lowering) and antioxidant activities. For these reasons, researchers concluded that banaba leaf extract may be beneficial in treating the symptoms associated with any form of metabolic syndrome, including diabetes.
