Safety Gas Detection Wins Two New Service Contracts at The University of Manchester
Tim Holmes of Lancashire firm Safety Gas Detection Ltd discusses the upcoming installation of oxygen depletion and gas monitoring systems across six laboratories at The University of Manchester
Preston, Lancashire (PRWEB) July 07, 2011
Safety Gas Detection - manufacturers, installers and servicers of gas monitoring systems - has won two contracts to service six laboratories at The University of Manchester.
The company, based in Leyland, in Lancashire, will service the oxygen depletion gas detection systems across several departments of the university as part of an annual maintenance contract.
Work will involve replacing parts such as batteries and sensors of the gas detection systems along with calibrating and routine testing of equipment.
Tim Holmes, Managing Director of Safety Gas Detection, said: āLaboratories require regular maintenance and servicing of their oxygen depletion gas detection systems otherwise the systems fail and the alarms are continually activated. If the systems don't function properly over longer periods, people working in laboratories can actually die as a result of a lack of oxygen.ā
Safety Gas Detection's gas alarm systems monitor the presence or depletion of a range of gases, including carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), flammable gas, oxygen, refrigeration gas, and toxic gas.
The company supplies, installs and maintains equipment such as carbon dioxide sensors, CO2 detectors, carbon dioxide testers, CO2 detection systems, plus carbon monoxide detectors, carbon monoxide alarms, CO gas detectors, along with other gas leaking or gas leakage detectors.
In addition, the company monitors refrigeration gases as well as hydrocarbons, flammable and toxic gases. Its gas monitoring systems can monitor more than one gas and can cover multiple areas of buildings.
Safety Gas Detection provides free, no obligation site surveys, as well as risk assessments, hardware installation, training, maintenance, calibration and alarm call receiving.
It also services components and parts of oxygen depletion gas detection systems of five of the most common suppliers: MSA, Crowcon, Quantum, GDS, and BOC.
The company is also embracing the most recent advances in technology. It provides gas monitoring systems that can be accessed remotely via the internet. In the event of an alarm, engineers from Safety Gas Detection can fault find and repair the system via the internet.
They can even provide text messages and emails to a client's key personnel to ensure that staff do not enter the risk area to get to the system's touch screen interface.
āThis is ideal for buildings not occupied 24/7 or where it would be unsafe to enter the building,ā says Tim.
Safety Gas Detection clients include a range of universities such as The University of Leicester, The University of Wales Institute Cardiff and The University of Liverpool, plus car park operators and businesses using refrigeration.
Tim added: āOur most common enquiry is for oxygen alarms - for users of liquid or gaseous nitrogen, such as in universities, pharmaceutical companies and the drinks industry, who need to detect oxygen depletion for personnel safety.
āWe also provide systems that monitor a range of other gases, along with manufacturing bespoke systems for specific applications such as refrigerant leak detection to meet the F-Gas Regulations and BS EN 378 which was updated in 2008.ā
He went on: āGas alarms are triggered when the levels of detected gas are greater than what is considered acceptable. Gas is continually measured by sensing points distributed around the risk area, which provide the central control system with accurate readings. Alarm levels are set so that key personnel are informed - via the control panel - of a potentially unsafe situation, coupled with alarm beacons which are usually provided to ensure all risk areas are covered with a clear signal to personnel.ā
Tim said that the gas monitoring systems his company provides can also switch on ventilation, shut down gas supplies and provide signals to a client's other systems, including e-mailing and text-messaging (SMS) key individuals.
āOur web remote access option allows our team to dial into our clients' systems from our offices to assist with alarm activations in real time. Gas levels are recorded (data-logged) to memory which can be recalled at a later date for analysis on a PC,ā said Tim.
āThe control panels of our systems are highly visual and feature a colour touch screen display. This shows clearly the safety status of the areas that we are monitoring.
āWhilst the systems do use highly complex monitoring software, they do not require user input, and run extremely reliably 365 days per year. An annual maintenance and calibration check is all that is usually required for the system to function satisfactorily for many years,ā he added.
Tim said that there is no scientific formula to calculate how many sensors are needed to cover an area as this depends upon a variety of factors - the type of gas(es) causing the hazard, dimensions of the room, provision of natural ventilation etc.
āThis is why we don't offer off-the-shelf systems for our clients to buy online because no two risks are identical.
āWe take gas safety very seriously, as usually lives are at risk. We see our role as a supplier of a safety solution, not just an electronic product available from an online shopping cart. We like to be involved from the start to ensure that the product that is fitted is best suited to the application, and providing a support facility for the future.
āSo, we are always happy to advise organisations on the most suitable systems for their specific needs or preferably we send a member of our technical team to carry out a no-obligation survey and assessment to get an even clearer picture of the challenges and requirements of each client.ā
āAll our systems come with a 5-year comprehensive parts and labour warranty - all that is required is an annual service to maintain the warranty. Beyond the 5 years, we can offer a 'no surprisesā support package for a fixed fee, so clients can manage their budget with confidence.ā
He added: āIf clients want to monitor more than one room or building, this is no problem. This is a standard feature of our systems and we can programme alarms for zoned areas to suit the needs of each client. We can then upgrade each system as circumstances change, adapting it in line with clients' requirements by adding or removing sensors and zones. Our systems will also connect to any building management system using standard alarm connections.ā
