Governed Self-Service Analytics Eases Administrative and IT Burden

TYSONS CORNER, Va., Feb. 22, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- MicroStrategy® Incorporated MSTR, a leading worldwide provider of enterprise software platforms, today announced that Virginia Tech has deployed MicroStrategy Analytics™ as its university-wide analytics software solution. Virginia Tech is a public land-grant university based in Blacksburg, Virginia, with research and educational centers throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia, the National Capital Region, as well as Switzerland, India, and the Dominican Republic.

"MicroStrategy enables us to provide a secure and consistent view into enterprise data, and its visualization capabilities are easy to use," said Debra Johnson, Director of Business Intelligence Services at Virginia Tech. "With our previous suite of reporting solutions, three users could run a report based on the same data and get three different answers. In addition, our user community didn't have the flexibility to adjust reports on their own."

After a rigorous evaluation of the reporting and analytics products on the market, Virginia Tech selected MicroStrategy for its common data model, organically-grown architecture platform, ease of use, governed self-service analytics framework, as well as for its visualization and reporting capabilities. Today, approximately 450 Virginia Tech employees drill into interactive MicroStrategy-based reports and dashboards of university data. Five-hundred more users will be added later this year. This data includes faculty performance, grant management, admissions, financial, and HR data. Virginia Tech's user community can now visualize its collected data sets, monitor trends within departments via intuitive dashboards, and develop strategies to use the data to enhance operational decision-making, or take steps to improve internal processes.

"We are taking a number of steps to prepare ourselves for the university's future growth," added Johnson. "Our philosophy is to empower departments to do as much reporting and dashboarding on their own as they desire. We're rolling out new MicroStrategy Analytics products that give everyone the ability to visualize their own data sets as well as combine them with enterprise data. We are building momentum among users at Virginia Tech, and expect to add hundreds of new users during 2016."

"In an era where higher education is actively recruiting the best students, stretching budgets and attracting more funding, leading universities such as Virginia Tech are strategically deploying secure, governed self-service analytics capabilities across their student, operational, and financial data," said Michael J. Saylor, Chairman, President and CEO, MicroStrategy Incorporated.  "Unlike most standalone tools that lack data trustworthiness and governance, MicroStrategy is able to harness an enormous range of siloed data spread across faculties and departments, and easily visualize it to allow educators to uncover new opportunities that increase operational efficiencies and deliver competitive advantages."
