NTRR: U.S. Cannabis Market Growth Continues as Illinois Opens First MMJ Cultivation Center

The U.S. market for legal cannabis goods and services expanded further last week with the announcement that Illinois' first state-authorized medical cannabis cultivation center has begun growing crops. Officials at Ataraxia in southeastern Illinois told reporters last week that the facility received state authorization July 10 and has begun cultivating the genetic strains that will be the basis of their products. When Ataraxia reaches full-scale production, it will grow cannabis year-round at its 52,000-square-foot facility in the city of Albion, according to the Chicago Tribune.

"This is a market with a huge amount of growth still to come," Brown said. "We expect that keeping up with demand will be a challenge, particularly as new regulations are instituted concerning the use of potentially harmful chemicals in the industry."

Illinois is only the latest state of many to authorize cannabis cultivation. Many others appear poised to allow the growing of the medicinal herb for medical and recreational use, said NTRR CEO Chris Brown.
