ShoeBuy Finds Women Would Rather Reveal Dating History than Fess Up to Shoe Spending

New Survey Reveals a Loss of Romance and Who's Really Faking It

BOSTON, June 2, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- It's a battle of the sexes when it comes to style secrets and hidden shopping behaviors – but who is the real culprit? Today, ShoeBuy, the world's largest, most diverse shoe shopping site with an amazing array of accessories, bags and clothing, announced the findings from their recent national survey of consumers aged 25-54. And the data reveals unexpected realities about secret keepers, daters and fakers.

ShoeBuy's recent national survey* of consumers aged 25-54 reveals unexpected realities about secret keepers, daters and fakers, and that where you live might just be the key to all your shopping cart secrets -- from who sports the athleisure trend and why, to where more online shoppers may be apt to splurge.

First, the secret keepers. Forget kissing…apparently a lady never shops and tells. Forty percent of women would rather tell their significant other about their romantic history than how much they spend on shoes. We all have our secret behaviors! Ladies, we salute you.

Next, the daters. One in six would shop a flash sale from their phone in the middle of a date. Where has all the romance gone? Women are more likely the offenders when boredom sets in, while men are twice as likely to take a shopping break at a wedding – let's just hope it's not their own. Silver lining: your date appreciates a good bargain, if that gets you going. Looks like this round is a tie.

And finally, the fakers. Men are twice as likely as women to wear athletic clothes when not exercising in an attempt to fake a workout. You're not fooling anyone, fellas! While women are more likely to wear yoga pants every day, fifty-three percent say comfort is their motivator, which comes as no surprise given the endless ways to style them into your everyday outfit. Or maybe both secretly want to capitalize on the fact that three in five people find their partner sexier when he/she is wearing athletic clothes. Guys lose this round of the honesty battle, but ultimately it's a win-win.

At the end of the day, however, style does bring out the best in most consumers. The survey also found forty percent of women who wear heels feel more confident when sporting a pair of stilettos, and one third of men who wear dress shoes feel more powerful when wearing them.

"Last year we discovered one in five women are more turned on by new shoes than by their significant others. This year we've unearthed a whole new set of exciting secrets," said Trisha Sweeney, Executive Vice President and Chief Merchandising Officer of ShoeBuy. "We're here to outfit everyone – whether you're a workout faker or shopping dater. We believe in shoe confidence, or feeling empowered by your fashion choices, and we are happy to see consumers agree."

Other findings from the survey include:

  • One third of people feel healthier when wearing athletic shoes.
  • Men place more emphasis on price and style when choosing sneakers than women, to whom comfort is the key.
  • One in five men would shop a flash sale from their phone in a meeting, compared to one in six women.

Additional survey findings are available online, along with a map revealing coast-to-coast shopping habits and regional traits.

Survey Methodology
This survey was conducted online nationally for ShoeBuy through Google Consumer Surveys among 500 men and women, ages 25-54 in May of 2015.
