Angie's List Brings Career Day to IPS Washington IrvingDay Designed to Introduce Kids to Jobs; Help with Trades Shortage

A national shortage of young people entering the trades could adversely affect both the home services industry and consumers. Angie's List is doing something about that.

When some Indianapolis Public School students get home today, their report on the day's activities could include time spent with shaggy dogs, cars in need of oil changes, how to paint the house, maybe even advice for their parents on how to keep the yard in good shape.

And they might be the city's next generation of small business owners, contractors, electricians, plumbers or HVAC specialists.

"We've noticed a trend of shortages in the pipeline for jobs in the trades, so we decided to do something about it," said Angie's List Founder Angie Hicks. "We're starting with our own neighborhood school but hope to visit more schools in the future."

Karen Hastings, Washington Irving principal, said she was happy to host the Angie's List Career Day.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for our children to start thinking about their futures and some careers they may not have envisioned," she said. "It's great for them to realize the wide array of professions out there, and even make contacts that will help them later."

Angie's List, ANGI, brought eight companies highly rated by Angie's List members, along with America's favorite paint manufacturer, Benjamin Moore Paint & Co., to IPS' Washington Irving School today. With demonstrations and talks, the companies showcased jobs that may be getting lost in the Digital Age, which gives most attention to jobs in high-tech. Companies were:

Pet Groomer: Sleepy Hollow Pet Ranch

Contractor: Blue Ridge Design

Pat Buis, owner of The Patrick Company, made time for the event because he wants kids to know they have opportunities.

"If you care about what you do and like what you are doing with your hands, the sky is the limit. You can be a painter, a crew leader and you can eventually be a business owner. It's all up to you," he said. "If you have desire, no matter what you do, you can excel."
