Two new names break into this year's lists

YARDLEY, Pa., Dec. 2, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Vetstreet.com, a leading website dedicated to providing pet owners with the most trusted and authoritative pet health information, released its annual list of America's most popular puppy names in 2014. The list was created by searching through Vetstreet's comprehensive database of 969,517 puppies born since January 1, 2014, and tallying the most popular names. There were 42,493 unique male puppy names and 41,950 unique female puppy names this year. Two new names broke into this year's top 10 lists, as Luna displaced Maggie for female puppies, and Zeus knocked Jack out of the top 10 for male puppies. The full article can be found on Vetstreet.com.

For male puppies, the No. 1 name on the list, Max, remains the same as last year. However, the No. 2 name, Charlie, and No. 3 name, Rocky, both climbed one spot to round out the top three. Last year's No. 2 name, Buddy, fell to No. 4, after holding the second spot for eight consecutive years.

For female puppies, the new name on the list, Luna, which was identified as a "name to watch" after the release of last year's list, jumped four spots to land at No. 9 on the list. The top three most popular female puppy names: Bella, Daisy and Lucy have all retained their spots atop the list. Bella has remained the most popular female puppy name since 2006, one year after the release of the first Twilight book, in which the main character's name is Bella. The name Luna also made the leap into the top 10 for the first time this year.

"Each year we review the most popular puppy names of the last 12 months in order to gauge how pop culture is changing how we name our pets," said Dottie Normile, VMD, Chief Medical Officer of Vetstreet. "We can see drastic jumps in pet names that correspond to popular characters in TV shows, movies and novels. It is a fun exercise in tracking the changing tides of American culture."
