Parents can recognize Summer Learning Day—on June 20, 2014— to emphasize the importance of summer learning and start family discussions about educational summertime opportunities. Ideas to help keep students learning throughout every season are also available from Connections Academy by visiting http://www.connectionsacademy.com/resources.

ABOUT SUMMER LEARNING “SLIDE”
Research has shown that academic concepts can “slide” over the summer, so providing children with learning opportunities allows them to hold on to previously learned knowledge and better prepare them for the new school year.

Findings:

  • Summer learning loss was greatest in math computation and spelling*
  • Students typically score lower on standardized tests at the end of summer vacation than they do on the same tests at the beginning of the summer**

The new Trivia Challenge is available to the public and is inspired by Connections Academy's year-long Quiz Bowl Challenge—a popular activity designed to educate Connections Academy students and one of the many clubs and activities students at the virtual school enjoy.
