There's No Crying in Earnings Season

Earnings season is approaching faster than interns are populating in our office, which is pretty fast considering Kyle Bazzy (Benzinga's Business Development Specialist) compared the intern growth rate to that of the breeding behavior of rabbits. To sum earnings season up in one word, I guess I would have to choose: hypnotiZING. I choose this word because it is crazy how many publicly traded companies report earnings during this time — sometimes over 100 companies a day. It is a great thing that our office keeps our minds focused with a never ending supply of coffee, which is especially important for the News Desk. However, as the supply of cream and sugar remains limited, shortages may be anticipated. In anticipation, several office speculators have begun to hoard these commodities, anticipating future profits. During normal times, our Senior News Analyst Tuomo Kallio has about 3-5 cups of coffee a day. For this earnings season, I'm going to swing for the fence and guess he drinks about 10 cups, as I have seen him chugging coffee in the back room this past earnings season. That is an idea of how it is around the News Desk during this EXTREME time. The beginning "big boy" companies have already caused problems. One example is when banking giant JP Morgan reported two different revenue figures. One figure was titled "reported basis", which was $26.78 billion, and the other was "managed basis", which was $27.41 billion. There was much debate within the office of which number to choose and was argued many hours after JP Morgan reported. This may seem petty to some, but here at Benzinga we strive to offer our customers any and all information faster than anyone else. But it is not good enough only to be fast, we strive for accuracy and precision as well, which is why JP Morgan's reported revenue figure was debated for quite awhile – we want to be the best; as K-Baz would say, "go zing or go home." So good luck fellow News Desk members (especially Aaron, Tuomo, and Sam), as early mornings and late nights await us. Yes, there also could be yelling, laughing, crying, and fainting. So to quote Detroit's own Eminem, "there's a storm comin' that the weather man couldn't predict." This is earnings season. Get ready. Zinger out, Brandon
