Happy National Donut Day

June 1 is National Donut Day. Let's lay off the jokes about how only America would celebrate a fatty sweet treat with its own holiday and enjoy the national treasure that is the donut in all of its frosted, custard or jelly-filled goodness. National Donut Day coincides with Dunkin' Donuts DNKN unveiling its first ever digital billboard over Times Square, so now masses of American can be reminded to pick up one of America's unofficial national desserts on the way to work (as if they needed the reminder). Dunkin' Donuts
DNKN chief global marketing and innovation officer John Costello said that, "National Donut Day is an important holiday to Dunkin' Donuts, and is a perfect opportunity to connect with our loyal donut fans. As the donut leader we are excited to celebrate with our guests in as many ways possible, whether it is in our restaurants with a free donut with a purchase of a beverage, online with chances to win Dunkin' Donuts Cards on Twitter, or in Times Square with the reveal of our new digital billboard." It has to be noted that Costello said that DNKN has "loyal donut fans". Many people will not have been aware that such a things exists. But DNKN, as well as the other leading brands in the industry, are doing what they can to celebrate the holiday. As well as unveiling its billboard, DNKN is giving away a free donut today to anyone who buys a beverage. On Friday morning, DNKN is holding steady at $32.47. Krispy Kreme KKD
KKD is going one better than DNKN, offering a free donut to anyone who walks into the store today, no purchase necessary. It has been an interesting couple of days for the company, which was the subject of a Motley Fool article on Wednesday called "Has Krispy Kreme become the perfect stock", highlighting its impressive growth and recovery rates. 2012 marks the 75th anniversary of Krispy Kreme, and it now has 690 locations around the world. On Friday, it is holding steady at $6.29. Tim Hortons THI
Perhaps due to the fact that it is a Canadian company, Tim Hortons has been surprisingly quiet when considering the fact that today celebrates the product that it is arguably best known for. It currently has the highest price however, holding steady on Friday at $53.30, and it is offering a free donut with any other purchase, but you have to visit the Facebook page and print out a coupon. A bit of a pain, but then perhaps they don't feel like they need to make as much of an effort. So there you go, America. Go forth and enjoy your free donuts. Follow me @BCallwood.
