Denmark’s 400-year-old stock exchange building, known as Boersen, was severely damaged by a fire on Tuesday. The building’s iconic dragon-tail spire collapsed onto the roof as a result of the blaze.

What Happened: The cause of the fire at the Copenhagen-based building is still unknown. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, according to Reuters. The building, which was undergoing renovation, was seen engulfed in a violent fire, with black smoke billowing out.

Witnesses in the Danish capital watched as emergency services fought to control the fire. Some individuals were seen attempting to save large paintings from the fire. This incident comes nearly five years after the devastating fire at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.

Jakob Engel-Schmidt, Denmark’s Culture Minister, expressed his grief over the loss of 400 years of Danish cultural heritage in flames on X. He praised the efforts of the building’s employees, emergency services, and local residents in trying to save iconic images and art treasures from the burning building.

“Horrible pictures from the Bourse. So sad. An iconic building that means a lot to all of us … Our own Notre Dame moment,” Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen wrote on X.

The presence of scaffolding around the building posed challenges for emergency services in accessing the flames, exacerbated by the copper roof trapping heat. Consequently, the nearby finance ministry was evacuated, police confirmed, according to the report.
