Mid-Morning Market Update: Markets Edge Higher; CVS Health Earnings Top Estimates

Following the market opening Monday, the Dow traded up 0.04 percent to 23,549.53 while the NASDAQ gained 0.21 percent to 6,778.52. The S&P also rose, gaining 0.04 percent to 2,588.78.

Leading and Lagging Sectors

Monday morning, the energy shares climbed by 0.90 percent. Meanwhile, top gainers in the sector included Baytex Energy Corp (USA) BTE, up 7 percent, and Ameresco Inc AMRC, up 6 percent.

In trading on Monday, telecommunications services shares fell 1.03 percent. Meanwhile, top losers in the sector included Verizon Communications Inc. VZ, down 5 percent, and Shenandoah Telecommunications Company SHEN down 3 percent.


Top Headline

CVS Health Corp CVS reported better-than-expected earnings for its third quarter on Monday.

CVS posted quarterly EPS of $1.50 per share on revenue of $46.2 billion. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $1.49 per share on revenue of $46.17 billion.

CVS now expects FY17 adjusted earnings of $5.87 to $5.91 per share, versus prior forecast of $5.83 to $5.93 per share.


Equities Trading UP

Diana Containerships Inc DCIX shares shot up 94 percent to $21.75 on no news. Diana Containerships shares rallied nearly 700 percent on Friday.

Shares of TherapeuticsMD Inc TXMD got a boost, shooting up 53 percent to $6.68 after the company reported a plan to resubmit the New Drug Application for TX-004HR. TherapeuticsMD reported a Q3 loss of $0.07 per share on revenue of $4.41 million.

TOP SHIPS Inc TOPS shares were also up, gaining 65 percent to $1.19 on no news.


Equities Trading DOWN

Medical Transcription Billing Corp MTBC shares dropped 15 percent to $3.39. MTBC reported a Q3 loss of $0.14 per share on sales of $7.51 million.

Shares of CYANOTECH CORP CYAN were down 11 percent to $4.36. Cyanotech reported Q2 earnings of $0.08 per share on sales of $8.05 million.

Sprint Corp S was down, falling around 13 percent to $5.79. T-Mobile TMUS and Sprint jointly announced Saturday that they have ceased talks to merge as the companies were unable to find mutually agreeable terms.


Commodities


In commodity news, oil traded up 0.68 percent to $56.02 while gold traded up 0.26 percent to $1,272.50.

Silver traded up 0.39 percent Monday to $16.90, while copper rose 1.49 percent to $3.164.


Eurozone

European shares were mostly lower today. The eurozone’s STOXX 600 rose 0.07 percent, the Spanish Ibex Index fell 0.30 percent, while Italy’s FTSE MIB Index declined 0.26 percent. Meanwhile the German DAX declined 0.18 percent, and the French CAC 40 dropped 0.21 percent while U.K. shares rose 0.02 percent.

Economics

The Treasury is set to auction 3-and 6-month bills at 11:30 a.m. ET.

New York Federal Reserve Bank President William Dudley will speak in New York at 12:10 p.m. ET.

The TD Ameritrade Investor Movement Index for October is schedule for release at 12:30 p.m. ET.
