Highlights From Chinese President's Speech At Davos

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, China's President Xi Jinping said that "no one is a winner in a trade war."

Xi's comments are likely a warning shot to President-elect Donald Trump, whose harsh stance on China could result in a trade war against the world's second largest economy.

The full speech lasted more than 45 minutes and can be viewed on Bloomberg.

Shared Futures

"Today, mankind has become a close-knit community of shared futures," the president said in a speech without referencing Trump or any U.S. politician by name. "Countries have become mutually dependent with extensive converging interests. All countries enjoy the right to development yet at the same time they should view their own interests in a broader context and refrain from pursuing their own interests at the expense of others."

Xi went on to caution against protectionist economic policies and equated protectionism to "locking yourself in a dark room" in order to "escape wind and rain, but also block out the sunshine."

Xi then called for a commitment for a global economy to "share the opportunities and interests" to achieve "win-win outcomes." He added that the global economy needs to re-commit toward establishing free trade and investments through better liberalization and improved policies — while simultaneously saying no to protectionism.
