Paramount Looking To Set Up 'Varsity Blues' TV Series At CMT

In a bit of cooperate synergy, Viacom's VIAB Paramount is looking to bring its cult classic "Varsity Blues" film to the small screen with TV sibling CMT.

The film, which followed the players on a high school football team, hit theaters back in 1999 and helped launch the career of James Van Der Beek. Jon Voight also co-starred as part of the ensemble cast. W. Peter Iliff, who penned the original, will write the pilot for the series.

The move comes as CMT is trying to boost its scripted original programming roster that also includes the newly acquired "Nashville." In addition, the network has a adaption of Broadway musical "Million Dollar Quartet" and Billy Ray Cyrus comedy "Still The King" on deck for 2016.

Small screen adaptations are a popular Hollywood trend as this fall adaptations of "Lethal Weapon," "Frequency" and "The Exorcist" are on deck with "Training Day" and "Taken" on the roster for next year.
