FiatChrysler Promises 'Thorough Investigation' Into Death Of Star Trek Actor In Recalled Jeep

The 'Star Trek' franchise lost one of their own on Sunday after the actor Anton Yelchin tragically died in an accident involving his Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV FCAU car. Yelchin is best known for playing the role of Pavel Chekov in the 2009 Star Trek reboot film. He reprised his role in the 2013 follow up 'Star Trek Into Darkness' and will appear posthumously in the upcoming 'Star Trek Beyond' film. Yelchin died when his 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee rolled and pinned him against a fence. TMZ, citing reports from law enforcement, reported that the engine of his car was still running in his driveway when his body was found and the car was left in neutral. The driveway was on a steep decline and its still known why he would have gotten out of the car in the first place with the engine still running. Bloomberg reported that Fiat recalled more than 1.1 million Grand Cherokees and other large vehicles in April because the drivers sometimes exited the car without putting them in park. A spokesperson for Fiat said the company is conducting a "thorough investigation." Bloomberg also quoted Fiat's CEO Sergio Marchionne who said during a conference call a recall of the vehicles would involve a software update that would automatically shift a car in neutral to park. A remedy is expected to be ready by no later than August. Meanwhile, Fiat Chrysler's stock has gained nearly 3 percent over the past 5 days and was trading higher by around 0.50 percent Tuesday morning.
