While breakfast in bed is always a treat, purchased gifts may have stolen mom's heart this year – tallying $30.3 billion.
According to research by finder.com, the typical American daughter/son put down $124 for the weekend's festivities. However, while the survey's breadth was extensive (6,050 participants), the spending figures ranged drastically by demographics.
Who Gives The Most Expensive Gifts?
Momma's little boys came out in spades, spending more than their female counterparts; the average male spent $177, while females spent an average of $97.
While gender demographics may come as a surprise, income brackets correlate positively to the price tag of Mother's Day gifts; the more income a child has, the greater the price tag on that present to mom.
Finally, the age demographic likewise revealed differences in spending habits. Millennials garnered the reputation of "most generous," paying an average of $296, while the older generations' spending decreased by age (an average of $41 for Baby Boomers and $137 for Generation Xers).
Other Observations
Interestingly, the amount spent celebrating moms trended by location, with certain state residents spending substantially more than others. Frugal states included Oregon, averaging $30 on Mother's Day gifts; Wisconsin at $33; and Indiana at $34. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Texans spent the most, averaging $248.
While Father's Day is still a few weeks away, based on past trends, finder.com anticipates the spending average to come in at $84, a substantial $19.5 billion less nationally.
