On the heels of FX's success with "American Crime Story," Comcast Corporation CMCSA's NBC has decided to get into the game with its own true crime anthology.

"Law & Order: True Crime" will debut next season and open its run with a eight-episode look at the trial of Eric and Lyle Menendez. The brothers, convicted in 1996 of brutally murdering their parents, managed to captivate the attention of America in much the similar manner as O.J. Simpson during his murder trial.

The series will mark the sixth (potential) drama airing on NBC from famed producer Dick Wolf, who also has "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" and the "Chicago" franchise which is expected to add a fourth installment in the fall.

Wolf's been a presence on the network since the 1990s; It's also courtesy of "Chicago Fire" and its multiple spin-offs that he has seen a resurgence in the last few years. While many analysts may look at this as a "me-too" scenario, essentially ripping off FX's success, Wolf and NBC know how to draw a crowd and the "American Crime Story" ratings show an audience desire for this type of content.
