Ford CEO Mum On Google Talks At Auto Show

Ford Motor Company F on Monday spoke about its Smart Mobility Plan at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Ford CEO Mark Fields said these growth plans are what will help the company disrupt itself in the face of the ever-changing auto industry. "We're changing the way the world moves, just like Henry Ford said 100 years," the chief executive said to the media.

The Wall Street Journal reported in December that Ford was pursuing a deal with Google to build self-driving cars that would use the software giant's technologies. Any agreement wouldn't be exclusive to Ford, a person familiar with the matter told WSJ, and Google continues to talk with other auto makers.

Many thought Ford might announce a partnership with Alphabet Inc GOOG GOOGL's Google at the Consumer Electronics Show last week, but that never came to fruition.

When asked at the Auto Show about talks of a Google merger or partnership, Fields said, "Listen, our whole approach on mobility -- it's broad, that's why we call it Ford Smart Mobility. We talk with a lot of different companies, we work with a lot of different companies about various elements of our Ford Smart mobility Plan.

"But I think as you can respect, those discussions are private with any companies and we're not going to comment on the speculation," Field concluded.

Shares of Ford recently traded at $12.68, up 1.1 percent on the day.
