Facebook's Messenger App Breaches 800 Million User Mark

Facebook Inc FB's David Marcus posted on the company's blog Thursday that it met a milestone of "800 million people using Messenger" monthly.

The messenger app was developed in 2014.

"We made Messenger blazing fast, we introduced video calling, the ability to customize conversations with colors, nicknames and emojis, and with Businesses on Messenger, we introduced a new way for businesses to engage their customers by providing them with a delightful, personal experience," Marcus said.

The company's new features for Messenger include integrating video and phone calls at the same time without having to have a Facebook account, use of "threads" to purchase services or buy items, more personalized tools for conversations, and the testing of its "M," digital virtual assistant, which is powered by human trained AI.

The company reported just 600 million active users in March 2014. Aside from the company's Messenger app, hundreds of millions of online users are also active on Facebook's Instagram and WhatsApp applications.

Shares of Facebook recently traded at $100.88, down 2 percent.
