In a world connected by the internet, automatic updates are considered the norm. Every time a new software model is rolled out, devices automatically prompt their users to download and install it. This is true for everything from smartphones to appliances, but connected automobiles have yet to embrace this idea. Instead, automakers must summon drivers into their dealerships in order to update their car's software, a process that seems archaic compared to how other devices are set up.

is one of the only car companies to offer over-the-air updates, or OTAs. The company is able to deliver the latest and greatest functionality to its connected cars wirelessly, eliminating the need for drivers to return to dealerships and ensuring that every customer has access to their car's latest features. recently announced
that it would push out a hands-free cruise control update this way for its Model S sedans later this month.

, keeping up with Tesla's OTAs isn't so simple. As their cars aren't electric, they are faced with the challenge of ensuring that software is compatible with a combustion engine. Another concern is safety, especially in the wake of a report showing that a Jeep Cherokee can be remotely accessed and driven by hacking into its software.
Starting Small
For now, the majority of OTAs released by automakers are exclusively for updates to entertainment systems, but as the technology improves they are expected to begin working with more intricate software updates. Many firms believe that OTAs will become more and more important to car makers as autonomous vehicles make their way to the market. As those cars will be heavily reliant on technology, frequent updates will be a necessity.
