Tesla's New Battery Could Save Money For Pot Growers

The marijuana industry is slowly gaining traction in the U.S. as more states begin legalizing recreational and medicinal marijuana sales across the country.

However, one unexpected consequence of the growing demand for pot has been a rise in electricity consumption among pot growers who need to power the bulbs that keep their plants alive.

This has become an obstacle for growers whose electric bills are rising quickly as some states have begun to impose a fee to offset the environmental impact their business has had.

However, Tesla Motors Inc TSLA latest battery offering could provide some relief to pot growers and make marijuana businesses even greener.

Consumption On The Rise

Utility experts have estimated that marijuana growers in the Pacific Northwest could consume as much energy as a small city over within the next 20 years if the industry continues to grow.

Because marijuana plants can only thrive in a climate controlled environment, growers must power everything from the high-powered bulbs that provide lighting to air conditioning units that keep the plants from overheating.

A Small Step Toward Sustainability

However, many are looking to Tesla to change all of that as the company's latest battery offering could help offset some of those costs and make marijuana greenhouses more environmentally friendly.

At the moment, the battery's 10 KWh storage would do little to power a marijuana grower's every day operations, but many say that the battery could prove beneficial during power outages as it would keep the greenhouses functioning.
