Apple Inc. AAPL could use new glass from Corning Incorporated GLW that adds sapphire to its Gorilla Glass already used on smartphones from Apple and Samsung, according to Patently Apple.

The report noted that sapphire was highly resistant to scratching, however its was vulnerable to a side impact.

“Corning's current Gorilla Glass has a high level of strength but is vulnerable to scratches. Corning's new glass display product has all the benefits of both types of glass and is scheduled to be put on the market within this year,” according to the report.

James Clappin, president of Corning Glass Technologies, told investors in February that “sapphire was great for scratch performance but didn't fare well when dropped. So, we created a product that offers the same superior damage resistance and drop performance of Gorilla Glass 4 with scratch resistance that approaches sapphire."

The report questioned if the new glass from Corning would be available in time for the next iPhone update, expected around September.

Apple Inc. recently traded at $126.79, down 0.63 percent, while Corning Incorporated recently traded at $22.58, down 0.42 percent.
