Iran Nuclear Deal Has Majority's Hesitant Support

The U.S., along with five other world powers, are in talks with Iran to curtail it from using its nuclear program, which it says is for peaceful purposes, to develop nuclear weapons. The Washington Post-ABC News poll was conducted on a random national sample of 1,003 adults via telephone. It reveals that "by a nearly 2 to 1 margin," local citizens agree with the idea of inking an agreement with Iran, which restricts its nuclear program "in exchange for loosening sanctions," reported

However, when it comes down to actually discussing whether or not such a deal will be solid enough, nearly six in 10 adults said they were not sure if the deal will altogether limit Iran from producing nuclear weapons. According to The Washington Post, "Overall, the poll finds 59 percent support an agreement in which the United States and its negotiating partners lift major economic sanctions in exchange for restrictions on Iran's nuclear program. 31 percent oppose a deal." Moreover, a "February Gallup poll" revealed that "more than three-quarters of the public thinks the development of nuclear weapons by Iran would pose a 'critical threat' to U.S. over the next decade. Still, "fewer than three in 10 said Iran's nuclear program requires military action now," and "more than four in 10 said the threat can be contained for now, and just under two in 10 said Iran is not currently a threat." The Washington Post-ABC poll also found that even those individuals who do not think the deal will have such a strong, positive impact, agree it should be made. "Support crests above 80 percent among respondents who are at least 'somewhat' confident a deal will stop Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. But even among those who are 'not so confident' about an agreement succeeding, two in three support a deal," says The Washington Post.
