Reuters
reported on Monday evening that Boeing Co BA could finalize arrangements with top technology companies like Google Inc, GOOG GOOGL Facebook Inc, FB Amazon.com Inc AMZN or Apple Inc AAPL to build high-throughput communications satellites. Jim Simpson, Boeing's vice president of business development and chief strategist told Reuters that big technology firms are "keen" on expanding Internet access around the world to help them grow. Speaking to Reuters at the Satellite 2015 conference, Simpson said that "The real key to being able to do these type of things is ultra high-throughput capabilities, where we're looking at providing gigabytes, terrabytes, pedabytes of capability." Without offering specific details about discussions with technology companies, Simpson noted that the challenge ahead is to drive down the cost of satellite communications to be more in line with terrestrial costs. When this materializes, technology firms will have an easier time to justify the expense of building large-scale communication satellites. Mark Spiwak, president of Boeing Satellite Systems International said that demand for geosynchronous Earth orbit (GEO) will remain "steady" at about two dozen a year, but those satellites would need to have greater processing power and larger bandwidth, given rising demand for global connectivity. The executive also noted that Boeing could also build low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, depending on customer preference.
