Google Launches Tool For Evaluating Cloud Computing Performance

Google Inc GOOG GOOGL launched a tool Wednesday for evaluating the performance of cloud computing services.

Google stated on its blog, “For those of you developing applications on the cloud, performance is often a critical concern. It turns out that it’s surprisingly difficult to evaluate cloud offerings beyond just looking at price or feature charts.”

Google’s new tool, PerfKit, is an open-source cloud benchmarking tool that seeks to assist developers by providing a “way to easily benchmark across cloud platforms, while getting a transparent view of application throughput, latency, variance, and overhead.”

The company has worked with over 30 researchers, companies and customers in developing the tool including ARM, Broadcom, Canonical, CenturyLink, Cisco, CloudHarmony, CloudSpectator, EcoCloud/EPFL, Intel, Mellanox, Microsoft, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., Rackspace, Red Hat, Tradeworx Inc. and Thesys Technologies LLC, according to its blog post.

Techcrunch commented that it is “cool to see Google launch an open-source benchmarking tool like this. The company has long said that it isn’t afraid to pit its cloud performance against its competitors’.”

Google Inc closed at $535.97 Wednesday, down 0.18 percent.
