Caterpillar Posts 10% Drop In Worldwide Sales

Caterpillar Inc.'s CAT worldwide machinery sales continued tracking downward the company said Wednesday, registering a 10 percent decline for its three-month rolling period ended September 30.

The Peoria, Illinois-based company, set to post third-quarter earnings Thursday, said construction equipment sales fell 3 percent during the period, while mining machines declined 28 percent. Each segment made up more than $5 billion of the company's $14.44 billion in second-quarter revenue.

Construction equipment sales were down 11 percent in Asia and by 3 percent in Europe. In North America the segment gained 11 percent.

Mining machine sales fell 48 percent in Asia, 26 percent in Europe and 28 percent in North America.

Analysts expect Caterpillar' third-quarter earnings will fall 18.5 percent from a year earlier to $1.36 per share, while sales are expected to decline 1.7 percent to $13.19 billion.

Caterpillar traded recently at $95.64, down 0.3 percent.
