Can The Avengers Save Samsung, T-Mobile?

T-Mobile is teaming up with Samsung to enhance the Galaxy S III with a free copy of Disney's DIS hit Marvel film, The Avengers. This snazzy bonus will be accompanied by the release of the AllShare Cast Wireless Hub from Samsung, a $99 T-Mobile device that will allow users to stream their digital entertainment to any television with an HDMI port. Galaxy S III users will be able to obtain their free copy of the film on Tuesday, September 25, the same day that The Avengers will be released on DVD, Blu-ray, iTunes, and other digital formats. "T-Mobile is committed to bringing leading-edge smartphone experiences to our customers by offering new features, including exciting content such as Marvel's The Avengers," Brad Duea, senior VP of product management at T-Mobile USA, said in a company release. "Whether our customers choose to stream or download content directly to their devices or share it to the big screen, as the only nationwide 4G network that offers an unlimited 4G data plan, T-Mobile is making it easier than ever to unleash all that the Galaxy S III has to offer." The Galaxy S III is an impressive smartphone, do doubt. However, this announcement seems to have come at the worst time possible. Apple AAPL is literally one day away from releasing the iPhone 5, a device that has already secured more than two million pre-orders, helping AT&T T achieve a new sales record. In fact, AT&T's customers are so excited for the new phone that they are willing to pay more to use one of the device's key features. In New York City, fans have lined up for days to purchase the new iPhone. Other, more affluent customers have spent a small fortune to get others to wait in line for them. This level of devotion cannot be reduced by a free copy of The Avengers. It is a nice bonus for those who already own a Galaxy S III, to be certain. That, however, is about as far as this offer will go. Samsung may hope that the promise of the Galaxy S IV will prevent some consumers from picking up a new iPhone, but any hype/rumors are unlikely to be beneficial. Just as Apple could not stop Android users from buying millions of Samsung handsets, the South Korean tech giant will not be able to deter Apple's loyal supporters from acquiring the iPhone 5. T-Mobile may have another goal in mind, hoping to use this free movie offer to build hype for the AllShare Cast Wireless Hub. The iPhone 5 will likely distract consumers from that as well, however.
