Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) was considering a buyout of Nokia (NYSE: NOK) in 2011, according to The Register. After examining Nokia's books, Microsoft declined to pursue an acquisition.

Renewed rumors surfaced last week with Microsoft once again being mentioned, along with Samsung (SSNLF). Korea's electronics giant denied the rumor, while Nokia refused comment.
