Selling once again heated up on Wall Street, with the Dow sinking more than 300 points in violent trading, as traders raced away from equities and into shelters like gold and government bonds.

As of 1:10 p.m. ET, the Dow Jones Industrial Average tumbled 331 points, or 3%, to 10,903, the S&P 500 slid 32.2 points, or 2.8%, to 1,140 and the Nasdaq Composite dipped 61.9 points, or 2.5%, to 2,422.
The euro zone debt crisis, which had fallen into the background, once again took the spotlight on Wednesday. Trading was ferocious once again, with the VIX, Wall Street's volatility gauge, surging 22.3%.
