Whitey Bulger told federal authorities that he traveled extensively during his 16-year life on the run, during which he was one of the most wanted men in the world. He recounted trips to Las Vegas, San Diego, Tijuana, Mexico, and even back to his old stomping grounds in Boston. The 81-year-old is accused of committing 19 murders during his criminal reign as boss of Boston's Winter Hill gang. He was found living in a rent-controlled apartment with his longtime companion Catherine Greig, in Santa Monica earlier this week. Bulger told the Feds that he took numerous trips to Las Vegas during his time on the FBI's Most Wanted list and that he "won more than he lost" playing the slots. He also revealed that he had traveled to San Diego and then crossed the border into Tijuana in order to buy medication. Most surprisingly, Bulger acknowledged that he had made several trips back to Boston, "armed to the teeth" to take care of "some unfinished business." Bulger is believed to have spent nearly all of his 16 years on the lam living in the same Santa Monica apartment where FBI agents discovered more than $800,000 in cash and a horde of weapons when they apprehended the octogenarian. Despite the large amount of cash found, and the government's belief that Bulger has access to more resources which he stashed with trusted associates, he has asked for a public defender. Bulger's court-appointed attorney, Peter Krupp, argued that the government's decision to make Bulger's alleged statements public jeopardizes any future trial of the crime boss. "The cases against Mr. Bulger have already been highly publicized, hyped, written about and sensationalized," Krupp said. "It will be as close to impossible for Mr. Bulger to get a fair trial on these charges as can be."
