As Twitter Inc TWTR prepares itself for declaring Q2 earnings, some are speculating whether the company will make an announcement about replacing Jack Dorsey as the interim CEO with a permanent candidate.

Edmund Lee from Re/Code was on CNBC to weigh in.

Can't Do Both

"If you're a shareholder, you're a Board member in any one of these [Twitter and Square] companies, you don't want a guy running two different companies at the same time," Lee began. "You can't effectively do either job if you are going to do that. So I think what it does is...if Square is serious about going IPO, if he is serious about going IPO, he can't be CEO of Twitter and he should just say that out loud now, that's the thing."

Why Isn't He?

Lee was asked why isn't Dorsey saying it out loud that he can't be CEO of Twitter if he has to take Square public. Lee replied, "I think there's a slim possibility he still wants to try to do both. He thinks somehow they are going to let him do both. It's a company he founded, so of course he feels passionate about it. But he founded Square as well, so you got to choose, you got to focus one way or the other."

Setting The Bar Low Is Good

On what are the Q2 earnings expectations from Twitter on Tuesday, Lee said, "Expectations are really low. You can play that game if you're Twitter and I think setting the bar low is good for them because any tiny win will probably help them out."
