T-Mobile US Inc TMUS released a preliminary report on Thursday which highlighted that the company added 2.1 million customers in the second quarter. The company also announced that its users now won't be charged extra for using their services in Mexico and Canada under its 'Mobile Without Borders' program.
T-Mobile CEO John Legere was on CNBC to weigh in on these latest developments.
The Numbers
"We announced 2.1 million net customers addition today," Legere said. "What that is is nine quarters in a row, not two or three, nine in a row of over a million, four of the last six over two million. We had 1 million postpaid subscribers addition and we had 760,000 postpaid phone nets. Those are up, by the way, 41 percent year-over-year on the nets."
He continued, "Churn was 1.3 percent, matched our record high. And I didn't announce, but I will announce here, the postpaid porting ratios with all of the industry stayed the same 1.9, with Sprint by the way, for eight quarters in a row they have been 2.0 to 2.1, they were [2.05]. So, they are coming for everybody."
'Amping Up' On Competition
Legere highlighted how he is raising the bar for competition, saying, "The reason I released the subs is in March of 2013, I announced the first of nine un-carrier moves and then what I said is I'm going to amp them up this summer. So, last week I amped up on carrier 2, I announced a jump on-demand program. It's a combination of leasing and upgrading, $15 a month you can get an iPhone 6 and upgrade three times a year."
"So today I amped up on carrier 1 and I will make it really simple, what I did is I call it 'Mobile Without Borders'. So I make Canada, Mexico and the U.S. all the same as going from New York to New Jersey, everything," Legere said.
