The wheel of fortune seems to be turning for Yahoo! Inc. YHOO as The National Football League (NFL) announced on Wednesday that it has chose the company as its exclusive partner to provide live streaming of an NFL game across the globe for free.

Adam Cahan, Yahoo SVP, was on CNBC recently to weigh in on this.

A Big Deal For Us

“I’ll start by saying we are thrilled that the NFL picked us as their exclusive partner for this,” Cahan said. “It’s a really, it’s a big historic event and for us to be able to offer that to our users, a global live stream of a football game completely for free, available on any device, to any connected user is a really big deal.”

Participating In The Platform Shift

He continued, “For us, we view this as a very big industry event and it really is a shift and it’s a platform shift and I think, if you look at how consumers are engaging right now especially with sports content or content more broadly, we are seeing times where people are on their mobile device more than they are even on their TVs, their desktop or anything else. So, for us to participate in that is a big deal."

Opportunity For Retaining Users

“About retaining users, I think, the opportunity for us is to ignite our global fan base. I mean, Yahoo reaches over a billion users monthly and we have one of the largest sports franchises, plus the largest fantasy, fantasy football is our the number one franchise out there. So, we think we have the opportunity to retain a lot of those users,” Cahan concluded.
