Will Dick Costolo Continue As Twitter's CEO In 2015?

Shares of Twitter Inc TWTR are down more than 40 percent year-to-date. The company has not provided much respite to its shareholders and the buzz of CEO Dick Costolo being ousted from the company is growing on the Street.

Storm Ventures Managing Director, Jason Lemkin, and Bloomberg’s Sarah Frier recently weighed on how much truth is in the rumors of another CEO taking over Twitter in 2015.

"Well, one thing we are hearing is we are just in the midst of people making their predictions for 2015 and one analyst in particular put out a note [Monday] saying that he expects that Dick Costolo will be out next year, that caused some frenzy in the stock. The stock traded up on the prediction and he didn’t have any insider knowledge, but it’s something we are hearing over and over that there has been so many management shuffles, but really who is to blame? And maybe Dick is to blame," Frier said.

Lemkin added to that saying, "Well, let's step back for a minute and take the macro view. I mean, Dick came into Twitter about five years ago, when it was a mess, it was a 'whale fail' and has built that into a $25 billion market-cap company. So, at a macro level this is an amazing accomplishment right? Not only as a VC, but as a founder and entrepreneur before, I think, we can all respect that."

Lemkin continued, "I think that challenge is that, the reality is he is neither a founder nor large shareholder nor sort of traditional corporate CEO. He in some ways came to the job almost accidentally as the COO and with Twitter as a standing as it's done over the last five years with it underperforming its peers, anyone in that role is sort of constantly at some risk in the boardroom."
