Thanksgiving and Black Friday were the days when retailers used to drop prices and sales used to sky rocket. However, times have changed and now the ‘holiday’ season extends almost two to three months. So, does Black Friday still matter like it used to?

John Sculley, ex-CEO of Apple Inc. AAPL, was recently on CNBC to discuss the significance of holiday sales and also on what he thinks of the iPhones and Apple Watch sales.

"You got to think about it as the selling season when 40 percent of the sales for these big retailers takes place in the last two months of the year. Trying to nail it on a particular day doesn’t really makes sense because they're stretching the offers out over weeks," Sculley said.

"I think that people are still going to malls, but they're taking their mobile smartphone with them. They are checking out prices, people pay more attention to what other customers have to say about products and services than they do to the big campaigns of the companies themselves."

When asked about the preference of consumers to not only buy on the smartphone, but also to buy smartphone as gifts, Sculley replied, "Apple has had a wonderfully big hit with their iPhone 6 and I think it has given me another point of view on the Apple Watch. I was kind of skeptical about the Apple Watch, but now it's pretty clear that Apple has been tuning the software on the Apple […] so, the Apple Watch may be more interesting product than I originally thought when they launched it."
