The online shopping industry has matured and is not seeing the kind of growth it witnessed pre-2010. However, what is seeing tremendous growth is mobile shopping. Even though the black Friday sales were disappointing this year, mobile shopping saw a massive uptick and the online retailer who seems to have benefited most from it is eBay Inc EBAY, all thanks to its subsidiary PayPal.

Pablo Rodriguez, head of Global Consumer Initiatives at PayPal Inc., was recently on Bloomberg to discuss how mobile shopping is changing the e-commerce scene.

"Well, mobiles is on the rise," Rodriguez said. "I think, for us at PayPal, we've crunched the numbers over the past three years and for us, we actually declared the holiday shopping season actually started on September 30th, as we are seeing merchants bringing more offers before Black Friday."

He continued, "So we crunched some of the numbers in terms of mobile shopping; mobile shopping is on the rise. Year-over-year for us at PayPal, we saw 62 percent increase in mobile shopping volume as compared to last year on Black Friday. On Thanksgiving it was 47 percent."

When asked about what people are buying on their mobile devices and does it differ from what they buy through computers, Rodriguez said, "So, for this year we looked at mobile shopping and the number one piece was apparel and jewelry followed by electronics."

Rodriguez also highlighted that consumers outside the United States are also taking advantage of Black Friday sales and retailers in United States are also enticing outside buyers with great offers.
