Nokia (NOK) Does It The Apple (AAPL) Way
February 15, 2010 8:31 AM
There was some surprise when Nokia Corp. (NYSE: NOK), the worlds largest mobile phone company, failed to introduce any new devices at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, which is the wireless telecom industry's biggest annual event.
While rivals like Motorola Inc. (NYSE: MOT) were using the event to launch new mobile phones, Nokia Corp. decided to use the event to focus on its services.
In an effort to get more publicity for new phones, Nokia is using a tactic that rival Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) has used successfully.
Instead of unveiling new products at an event crowded with competitors, Nokia launches new products at its own events, thus gaining more publicity with all eyes on its products.
Nokia used the industry event to promote services like Ovi Maps, Comes With Music and Nokia Money, its attempt to create mobile banking services.
