Now that the speculation is behind us, at least in terms of Facebook's vital statistics, we can finally get a sense of the massive scale of this platform. Facebook users are many and active, according to the company's S-1 filing.

Here's what you need to know:

1. Monthly active users: Facebook has 845 mn monthly active users (as of December 31, 2011). This is an increase of 39 percent from the 608 mn it had at the end of 2010.

2. Daily active users: 483 mn people are active on Facebook every day – that's 57 percent of the entire Facebook community! What's interesting is that this metric is up 48 percent (from December 31, 2010 to December 31, 2011). Daily use, it seems, is growing faster than monthly use, which speaks well of the company's engagement levels for the future.

3. Mobile monthly active users: Facebook has 425 mn mobile monthly active users – a hair over 50 percent of its total monthly active user base. Interestingly, Facebook makes virtually no money on mobile use right now (more on this in a separate post in the near future – register now to have it sent to your inbox).

4. Likes and comments: 2.7 billion of these interactions occur every day – that's 5.6 per daily active user! Additionally, 250 mn photos are posted every day (but that doesn't make all of them interesting).

5. Friendships: Facebook boasts 100 bn friend connections on the platform.
