White House Council of Economic Advisers Chairman Christina Romer appeared on the Fox Business Network this morning to talk about the Nonfarm Payrolls number and about the potential for additional programs and spending to help boost the economy and jobs. Romer was unwilling to call the Nonfarm number a disappointment, which is in contrast to the perception of many investors. She said, "let's put these numbers into perspective. As you know, a lot of these jobs were temporary census jobs. We did create 41,000 jobs in the private sector. That's lower than we have seen in some previous months, but what we do know is these numbers do move around. There is a lot of noise in them. What we tend to look at is the longer term picture and we have now had positive job creation for five months in a row." She also touched on the possibility of additional stimulus packages, including tax incentives for clean energy manufacturing, aid to state and local governments, and extending unemployment relief.
