We learned in the late 1990s that eyeballs alone don't make a great company, but that doesn't mean you don't need them! The growth of the social media space has led to an intense amount of competition, and nobody is immune. Beyond monthly active users and pageviews, it's important to know how long users stick around.
Unsurprisingly, Facebook is the clear leader. The rest of the pack, however, keeps it interesting. The average visit lengths for the top sites on the web are:
Facebook: 6 hours, 33 minutes
Tumblr: 1 hour, 38 minutes
Pinterest: 1 hour, 17 minutes (Inside IPO now has a board on Pinterest!)
Twitter: 36 minutes
LinkedIn: 17 minutes
Google+: 6 minutes
Facebook is the clear leader, by a mile. But, Tumblr and Pinterest, two of the hottest social media start-ups in the post-Facebook generation, occupy the next tier by themselves. The more ‘mature' social media companies – Twitter and LinkedIn – are pretty far behind.
