According to the New York Times, U.S. Representative Anthony Weiner has told leaders in the House and his friends that he plans to resign his seat amid growing pressure from Democratic colleagues to leave Congress. Weiner has been embroiled in a "sexting" scandal ever since he mistakenly sent a lewd photo over Twitter to a college co-ed, which he mistakenly shared with his entire Twitter feed. He subsequently lied about the incident, and suggested that his account had been "hacked." According to the Times, Weiner called Representative Nancy Pelosi last night to inform her that he had decided to resign today. Mr. Weiner plans to resign in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn at 2 p.m. This news comes on the heels of of a Democratic meeting to discuss whether to strip the congressman of his committee assignments, a move which would neutralize his effectiveness. The pressure on Weiner has been mounting in recent days with top House Democrats, including majority leader Ms. Pelosi, urging him to step down. Furthermore, earlier in the week, President Obama suggested that he should resign, while Ms. Pelosi told reporters that she was prepared to strip Weiner of his committee assignments.
