Samsung Galaxy Social Media Buzz Slumping

The gold standard in smartphones, Apple Inc. AAPL, is expected to report its second consecutive quarter of year-over-year iPhone sales declines this week. Despite Apple’s struggles, the latest data from TickerTags indicates Samsung Electronic SSNLF and its Galaxy phones don’t seem to be seizing the opportunity.

According to the latest numbers, organic social media mentions of Samsung’s Galaxy line are down 32 percent so far in 2016 compared to the same time last year. In addition, organic mentions in Q2 fell 24 percent compared to Q1 and 42 percent compared to Q2 of 2015.

The lack of social chatter about the Galaxy may not end up as bad for the company’s bottom line as it seems, however. Data from Kantar Worldpanel shows that the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge has gained a slight market share edge over the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus in the U.S. While the Galaxy models are roughly 6 months newer than their iPhone counterparts, it’s a battle that Apple has always won in the past.

Despite slumping social media buzz, Samsung’s stock is up 19.0 percent in 2016, while Apple’s stock is down 7.5 percent.
