CVS Health Says Overdose-Reversal Drug Is Now Available Without A Prescription In Texas

CVS Health Corp CVS revealed that the opioid overdose-reversal medication, naloxone, is available now without a prescription in all its pharmacy stores in Texas. According to the company, it created a standing order with physicians in Texas enabling it to expand access to the medication in the state.

Apart from Texas, the company indicated that locations in 30 other states would also be able to dispense naloxone to patients without an individual prescription by next month.

CVS Pharmacy Professional Practices VP, Tom Davis, said, "Naloxone is a safe and effective antidote to opioid overdoses and by expanding access to this medication in our Texas pharmacies by the use of a physician's standing order for patients without a prescription, we can help save lives. We are dedicated to helping the communities we serve address and prevent drug abuse and we are expanding access to naloxone to give more people a chance to get the help they need for recovery."

The company indicated that increasing access to the drug was a critical public health priority enabling patients to prevent opioid fatalities apart from recognizing the need for help in working towards recovery from the addiction of disease.

CVS Health said it also introduced digital resources on its web site giving patients, as well as, families a single destination to learn more about drug abuse prevention. The company added that these new resources established its longstanding commitment to helping communities address and prevent drug abuse.

The stock dropped 1.83 percent on Monday.
