Robert Hunter, senior adviser to RAND Corporation's Washington, D.C. office, discusses priorities for conflict resolution in the wake of Obama's Middle Eastern policy address. The Arab Spring has highlighted the need to resolve long-standing regional issues such as Iran's nuclear program and social unrest in the Gaza strip. These issues must be tackled before larger regional goals like Israeli-Palestinian reconciliation are possible, Hunter says. “As long as the Israelis see an Iranian nuclear program that could go to nuclear weapons, frankly I don't think any Israeli government can negotiate with the Palestinians.” Unrest and poor social conditions in the Gaza strip, meanwhile, ensure the continued embitterment of the Palestinian cause. “Unless you deal with those background issues where the United States has a critical role to play, I think negotiations just aren't going to go anywhere.” Download the full podcast for detailed analysis of the President's address and its implications for American policy in the Middle East.
