U.S. equities see-sawed during Thursday's trading session but ended near the session lows. The Dow Jones lost 0.25 percent to close at 16,413.22, the S&P 500 lost 0.47 percent to close at 1,917.82 while the Nasdaq index was an under-performer as it lost 1.03 percent to close at 4,487.54.
Earnings season was fresh in investors minds on Thursday and this extended into the after hours trading session.
Nordstrom, Inc. JWN plunged lower by more than 7 percent as the company missed estimates on its top and bottom line for the fourth quarter and guided its full year earnings below the Street's expectations.
Shares of Allscripts Healthcare Solutions Inc MDRX lost more than 3 percent after the company reported that it earned $0.13 per share on revenue of $345.6 million. Wall Street analysts were expecting the company to earn $0.13 per share on revenue of $357.91 million.
Applied Materials Lead Gainers
Shares of Applied Materials, Inc. AMAT surged higher by more than 7 percent after the company reported it earned $0.26 per share in the first quarter on revenue of $2.26 billion, representing a top and bottom line beat.
Nivalis Therapeutics Inc NVLS, a clinical-stage pharmaceutical company, spiked higher by more than 6 percent after the company announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration ("FDA") has granted Fast Track designation for the Company's lead investigational drug, N91115, a novel stabilizer of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) protein.
