With Facebook Inc FB turning its focus on video, the competition for Google Inc GOOGL's YouTube is slowly heating up. Gene Munster, Piper Jaffray Internet analyst, was on CNBC Monday to discuss which among these two companies is poised to emerge as leader in video.
Struggle Between Advertisers
"Well the centre is ad dollars in general and at the end of the day they are both going for video dollars," Munster began. "Google right now does about 8 billion views on YouTube and Facebook has gone from about a billion to 4 billion. And so, that's essentially the struggle between advertisers as to that hee and the haw for those dollars."
Facebook Is Slowly Grabbing Attention
Munster continued, "And ultimately is that the nice news about Facebook is they [are] coming from almost no video and in Google's case obviously YouTube is a huge property. One other things importantly about this story is that the sense is that Facebook is slowly grabbing attention from advertisers away from Google in video in particular."
Both Of Them Well Positioned
"But on the last earnings call Google mentioned that the views -- now this isn't ad dollars, but the views -- on YouTube were at a 2-year high. They actually accelerated the growth and so this mystery about what's going on [in] video between YouTube (perhaps meant Facebook) and Google thickens, but at the end of the day both of them are really well positioned for what's a secular growth theme," Munster concluded.
