Broadcom Powers Ultra HD World Cup Broadcast - Analyst Blog

Leading semiconductor solutions provider Broadcom Corporation BRCM recently collaborated with cable and media firms to facilitate live Ultra HD (high definition) satellite broadcast of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil across South America. With this strategic tie-up, Broadcom has raised the bar in the industry for the transmission of Ultra HD images for live matches that offer 4X the resolution of traditional 1080p60 HD displays for unmatched clarity.

Broadcom has partnered with Globosat, a multi-channel cable and satellite TV service provider in Brazil, and Elemental, a leading supplier of software-defined video solutions for multi-screen content delivery across the globe, for this endeavor. The first-of-its-kind special live broadcast of the final three matches of the World Cup validates the rising popularity of Ultra HD technology.

While Globosat will provide satellite uplink and signal receiving systems, Broadcom's flagship video decoder system-on-a-chip (SoC) will decode the images with high efficiency video codec (HEVC) compression, 60 frame-per-second resolution and 10-bit color standard. The images will then be encoded by Elemental Live video encoders for subsequent transmission for commercial purposes.

The Ultra HD (4k) display resolution speeds of 60 frames per second (4Kp60) offers 2x the speed of the current displays available in the market. Together with a 10-bit Rec 2020 color standard, it provides crystal clear images with superior color quality for ideal live-action viewing for the FIFA World Cup matches.

The quadrennial soccer tournament arguably has the biggest television audience compared to any other sporting events in the world. The global viewership is expected to increase manifold this year with extensive proliferation of digital and social media channels. Consequently, Broadcom is expected to reap huge benefits with the successful execution of this Ultra HD satellite transmission along with other broadcasters like The Walt Disney Company DIS-owned ESPN, Telef TEF and Rogers Communications Inc. RCI.

Based in Irvine, CA, Broadcom is engaged in designing and marketing semiconductor components of network voice, video, and data traffic for various applications. Broadcom continues to drive innovation and engineering excellence across a broad range of communication end markets to help its customers enhance device performance, cut down costs, and improve overall power efficiency.

This Zacks Rank #2 (Buy) firm is well placed in the fast-growing wired and wireless communications markets, with cutting-edge solutions for a growing number of connected users who are demanding more content and bandwidth. The company is further expected to augment its market share by capitalizing on this Ultra HD broadcast for the soccer-crazy fans across the globe.
